Since December of 2016, the Board of Education and the district administration have been discussing how to find solutions to the district’s financial problems: $4.6 million in projected deficit spending in 2016-17, and similar deficits in the future years.
According to the district’s First Interim Report, currently the most accurate version of the budget, the multi-year projections indicate that at the current rate, the district will deplete its reserves to the legal limit by 2020-21. The legal limit states that districts are required to have three percent of total expenditures in reserve for the next school year. The Second Interim Budget was presented at the March 14 board meeting to give a more accurate picture of the current state of the budget. This article is based off information from the First Interim Report.
In a presentation to the Board of Education on Feb. 9, Superintendent Dr. Michael Bregy, who at that point had only been at the district for a week, told the board that “we are on an unsustainable economic path, currently.

New superintendent brings experience to district
This feature article is about the new superintendent, Dr. Michael Bregy, in the district. Starting Jan. 30, new superintendent Dr. Michael Bregy will take hold of the steering wheel of the district.
Upon his arrival from Hyland Park, Illinois, Bregy will find himself in the midst of many challenges that the district is currently facing, but he believes that his extensive experience in school district leadership will allow him to demonstrate his talents in times of crisis.
Bregy’s interest in education solidified when he was only in the fourth grade. After teaching elementary, middle and high school students, he became a high school principal at Jacobs High School in Algonquin, Illinois, for six years.
“As early as I can remember, I have enjoyed the school environment as I was involved in clubs, activities and athletics,” Bregy said.

Every 15 Minutes, which took place on March 6 and 7, is a two-day program that challenges students to think about driving under the influence and the impacts their decisions could have on others. City-wide collaboration and months of preparation led up to the moving execution of Beverly’s version of Every 15 Minutes.
“The executive committee has been planning this event for over a year. We meet every one to two weeks to make sure every detail is fine tuned. Every 15 Minutes is a collaboration of the city of Beverly Hills, police department, fire department, BHHS, school district and community – all with the purpose of saving lives,” PTSA co-president and Every 15 Minutes sponsor Jodi Galen said.
As the K.L. Peters Auditorium is closed for renovations, the Every 15 Minutes Steering Committee used a ballroom at the Beverly Hilton for the memorial service part of the program and for day one for the freshmen and sophomores.
