Construction encroaches on campus space
For this passion project article about the construction updates and activity happening on campus, I co-wrote, gathered information from online research, and conducted interviews. This was my first time using the multimedia platform Atavist to organize this multi-part story.

With the district concurrently working to improve its quality of education and upgrade its facilities, decisions made in the near future will likely define the next generation of the school district. Don Blake, the district’s newly hired Director of Facilities, describes it as “a moment in history that’s not going to come around again.”
“This is pretty much the shot to rebuild the district,” Blake said. “The way I look at it is this is the most exciting thing I’ve seen in years. It’s an incredible opportunity; it’s not just building buildings, it’s affecting a huge change, and I’m interested in that because it can be done."
Although recent months have been consumed by the reconfiguration debate–a debate centered around how to improve the quality of the TK-12 experience–the upcoming months will be hectic from a facilities standpoint. With four different projects on or around the high school slated to begin in the month of March, the high school’s lengthy hiatus from construction will come to an abrupt end. From a facilities standpoint, it may be the first sign of momentum in almost two years, a reality that is not lost on Principal Mark Mead.

The boys varsity water polo team beat the Milken Wildcats on Monday, Oct. 16, by a score of 12-6.
While this match was a non-league play, it was a game many players were anticipating.
“Milken has always had a strong water polo program, and many players on both teams have known each other for years. Especially after our last match, the game today felt personal—both teams knew each other and really wanted to win,” co-captain Jonathan Artal said.

Boy Scouts of America announced on Oct.11 that starting next year, it will allow girls to join the organization. In 2018, girls will be allowed to join the Cub Scouts program, and in 2019, a program allowing older girls to earn the rank of Eagle Scout will be instated.
This announcement has not only elicited a national debate, but also stirred conversations within the Norman Nation, including senior Michael Huang, who is currently working to become an Eagle Scout.
“I believe that Boy Scouts accepting girls is a big step towards being inclusive, as teaching girls to be strong leaders will come as necessary now and in the future,” Huang said.

As much of the school remains in the throes of construction, there is very little greenery around campus. What used to be stretches of freshly-cut grass, the front lawn is now a plot of dirt and dried weeds. The Village is comprised of identical bungalows, separated by metal fences and strictly aligned on the slab of cement.
In an effort to revamp the campus’s bland look and to generate a sense of unity and appreciation among the staff, English teacher Minna Kim is spearheading the Gratitude Garden. The Garden is a wall of various succulents and plants, which will be created on the fence by the wall, which previously had a faded Superman painting and the Class of ‘01 sign, closest to the Village.
Every time a faculty member thanks another faculty member for some deed or action, a new plant is planted in the garden in honor of that staff member. Currently, there are roughly 120 plants “representing the thank you’s people have written for faculty members.” Additionally, students can write thank-you notes on rocks and add them to the garden.
